Come and enjoy rarely performed vocal solo repertoire featuring Finnish composers Jean Sibelius, Yrjö Kilpinen, Leevi Madetoja, Oskar Merikanto and more. Susan Hale, mezzo-soprano; Kevin Helppie, baritone; Scott Tuomi, tenor will perform pieces from Finland’s rich tradition of art song; accompanied by pianist Susan McDaniel. This program of atmospheric beauty embraces the melancholy and frozen darkness of solitude, as well as the lightness of humor and joy!
Susan Hale, mezzo-soprano, has been actively involved with choral music for many years in the Portland area as an ensemble singer, soloist and educator. For twenty years, she performed as a member of the Berwick Chorus of the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene. She currently sings with the women’s early music ensemble In Mulieribus and Cappella Romana. In 2015, she completed a long tenure as choral director at Tigard High School.
Kevin Helppie, baritone, has been involved professionally in choral and vocal music for over 30 years, directing collegiate and church choirs in Washington, Oregon, Kentucky and Texas. Kevin is a frequent solo vocal performer throughout the Northwest. He was a guest teacher and recitalist in Finland, Latvia and China. Kevin’s educational Art Songs are published in the Royal Conservatory of Music Anthology. He holds degrees from Indiana University and the University of Washington.
Scott Tuomi, tenor, has had a career that has spanned solo vocal performance, music education and choral conducting. He recently retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus after thirty eight years of teaching at Pacific University. His dissertation is dedicated to the accessibility of Finnish Art Songs for American singers.
Susan McDaniel has appeared widely as a solo and collaborative pianist, including regional and national concert tours as well as recitals in numerous European countries. The recipient of an M.M. in vocal accompanying from the Manhattan School of Music, she has served as lecturer of music in collaborative piano at the University of Portland since 2018.
